Legal Metrology Act,2009
We at HVCS provide advisory with respect to labels and similar matters covered under the Act.
The Central Government has enacted Legal Metrology Act 2009, which had come into force on 1st April 2011. This Act rationalizes the units for measurement to be used in India. Act also specifies the Metric System to be used for the purposes of its measurement and regulates the manufacture, sale and also the use of standard weight and the measures.
The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 replace the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1976 and the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985. It also provides for establishing uniform standards of weights and measures regulate trade in weights, and other goods which are sold in number or distributed by weight and measure. The labelling of products is covered under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules,2011 (‘Packaging Rules’). The Packaging Rules have become the hot topic among manufacturers and sellers of products. Legal Metrology Department has been issuing notices on non-compliances of the packaging Rules.
